A Guided Scriptural Meditation on Christian Discipleship

A friend of mine, Michael, teaches Faith Formation at my parish. He recently sent me this list of Bible verses for the topic of Christian discipleship that he developed for his students. I asked for permission to share it with our friends and fans at The Catholic Company as a meditation for Lent. I hope you are able to get a lot out of it!

A Guided Scriptural Meditation on Christian Discipleship

1. Holy is the Lord, our God. Ps 99:9

2. Be still and know that I am God. Ps 46:10

3. Wait for the Lord with courage; be stouthearted, and wait for the Lord. Ps 27:14

4. I will lead her into the desert and speak to her heart. Hos 2:16

5. [She] has chosen the better part and it will not be taken from her. Lk 10:42

6. Come by yourselves to an out of the way place and rest a little. Mk 6:31

7. Rising very early before dawn, He went off to a deserted place; there He was absorbed in prayer. Mk 1:35

8. Come to Me, all you who are weary and find life burdensome and I will refresh you. Mt 11:28

9. Come and see. Jn 1:39

10. Repent and believe. Mk 1:15

11. I am the light of the world. No follower of Mine shall ever walk in darkness. Jn 8:12

12. You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free. Jn 8:32

13. Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. 1 Thes 5:19

14. Taste and see how good the Lord is. Ps 34:9

15. Find your delight in the Lord who will give you your heart’s desire. Ps 37:4

16. I sought the Lord, and He answered me. Ps 34:5

17. Heed Me, and you shall eat well; you shall delight in rich fare. Is 55:2

18. I Myself am the bread of life. No one who comes to Me shall ever be hungry; no one who believes in Me shall ever thirst. Jn 6:35

19. With joy you will draw water at the fountain of salvation. Is 12:3

20. The words I spoke to you are spirit and life. Jn 6:63

21. Be filled with the Spirit. Eph 5:18

22. This is the time of fulfillment. Mk 1:15

23. I came that they might have life and have it to the full. Jn 10:10

24. I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in Me, though he should die, will come to life; and whoever is alive and believes in Me will never die. Jn 11:25-26

25. Now is the day of salvation. 2 Cor 6:2

26. This is the day the Lord has made; let us be glad and rejoice in it. Ps 118:24

40. God is love. 1 Jn 4:8

41. The Lord is gracious and merciful, slow to anger and of great kindness. Ps 145:8

42. His mercy endures forever. Ps 118:1

43. Steadfast is His kindness toward us, and the fidelity of the Lord endures forever. Ps 117:2

44. God is faithful. 1 Cor 1:9

45. I am with you always. Mt 28:20

46. O Lord, [You are] my rock, my fortress, my deliverer. 2 Sam 22:1

47. God is our refuge and our strength. Ps 46:2

48. The Lord is my light and my salvation. Ps 27:1

49. Whoever does not accept the reign of God like a little child shall not take part in it. Mt 10:15

50. Seek first His kingship over you, His way of holiness, and all these things will be given you besides. Mt 6:33

51. Love the Lord, your God, will all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength. Dt 6:5

52. Trust in the Lord with all your heart. Prv 3:5

53. Where your treasure is, there your heart is also. Mt 6:21

54. When he finds a pearl of great price, he goes and sells all that he has and buys it. Mt 13:46

55. If you seek perfection, go, sell your possessions, and give to the poor. You will then have treasure in heaven. Then come and follow Me. Mt 19:21

56. None of you can be My disciple if he does not renounce all his possessions. Lk 14:33

57. No one can serve two masters. You cannot give yourself to God and mammon. Mt 6:24

58. They abandoned their nets and followed Him. Mk 1:18

59. If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny his very self and take up his cross each day and follow Me. For whoever wishes to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will save it. Lk 9:23-24

60. I have come to rate all as loss in the light of the surpassing knowledge of my Lord Jesus Christ. Phil 3:8

61. The one who humbles himself will be exalted. Lk 18:14

62. The last shall come first. Mt 19:30

63. Precious in the eyes of the Lord is the death of His faithful ones. Ps 116:15

64. Unless the grain of wheat falls to the earth and dies, it remains just a grain of wheat. But if it dies, it produces much fruit. Jn 12:24

65. It was I who chose you to go forth and bear fruit. Jn 15:16

66. I, the Lord, have called you for the victory of justice. Is 42:6

67. If we live in the Spirit, let us also follow the Spirit. Gal 5:25

68. Your ways, O Lord, make known to me; teach me Your paths, guide me in Your truth and teach me. Ps 25:4-5

69. The law of the Lord is perfect. Ps 19:8

70. This is My beloved Son. Listen to Him. Mk 9:7

71. Take My yoke upon your shoulders and learn from Me. Mt 11:29

72. Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light for my path. Ps 119:105

73. Blessed are those who hear the word of God and keep it. Lk 11:28

74. You are My friends if you do what I command you. Jn 15:14

75. As I have done, so you must do. Jn 13:15

76. Cease doing evil; learn to do good. Is 1:16-17

77. [This is] what the Lord requires of you: Only to do the right and to love goodness, and to walk humbly with your God. Mi 6:8

78. Be perfect, just as your heavenly Father is perfect. Mt 5:48

79. Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful. Lk 6:36

80. Love your enemies, and pray for those who persecute you. Mt 5:44

81. Forgive as the Lord has forgiven you. Col 3:13

82. Do to others whatever you would have them do to you. Mt 7:12

83. You shall love your neighbor as yourself. Lev 19:18

84. The gift you have received, give as a gift. Mt 10:8

85. Love one another as I have loved you. Jn 15:12

86. Whatever you did for one of these least brothers of Mine, you did for Me. Mt 25:40

87. Whoever wants to rank first among you must serve the needs of all. Mt 20:27

88. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Ps 118:26

89. I am the servant of the Lord. Let it be done to me as you say. Lk 1:38

90. Speak, Lord, for Your servant is listening. 1 Sam 3:9

91. I have come to do Your will, O God. Heb 10:7

92. Not my will, but Yours be done. Lk 22:42

93. Be transformed by the renewal of your mind, so that you may judge what is God’s will, what is good, pleasing, and perfect. Rom 12:2

94. Pour new wine into new wineskins. Mt 9:17

95. You must put on that new man created in God’s image, whose justice and holiness are born of truth. Eph 4:24

96. When you come to serve the Lord, prepare yourself for trials. Sir 2:1

97. How narrow is the gate that leads to life, how rough the road. Mt 7:14

98. In my own flesh, I fill up what is lacking in the sufferings of Christ. Col 1:24

99. Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified their flesh with its passions and desires. Gal 5:24

100. Create in me a clean heart, O God, and put a new and right spirit within me. Ps 51:12

101. Blessed are the pure of heart, for they shall see God. Mt 5:8

102. Everyone who has this hope based on Him keeps himself pure, as He is pure. 1 Jn 3:3

103. Be holy, for I, the Lord your God, am holy. Lev 19:2

104. Watch and pray. Mk 14:38

105. Let us keep our eyes fixed on Jesus. Heb 12:2

106. Remain in Me, as I do in you. Jn 15:4

107. Remain in My love. Jn 15:9

108. My grace is enough for you. 2 Cor 12:9

109. In Him who is the source of my strength, I have strength for everything. Phil 4:13

110. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. 2 Tim 3:7

111. Well done, my good and faithful servant. Come, share your Master’s joy. Mt 25:21

112. I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end. Rev 22:13

113. Christ is all and in all. Col 3:11
