Pope Francis has a special devotion to Our Lady Untier of Knots. As a Cardinal studying in Germany he came across the Bavarian painting of "Holy Mary, Our Lady Untier of Knots" and took a copy back to Argentina and promoted devotion to Mary under this title. Cardinal Bergoglio also had an image of Our Lady Untier of Knots engraved into a chalice and presented it to then-Pope Benedict XVI. The theology of Mary untying knots goes back to the second century and was understood as Mary untying the knot of sin and disobedience created by Eve.
