It's one of the best-loved parables in all of Scripture.
A son demands his inheritance, wastes everything, and finally comes home expecting to be treated like a servant. Instead, his father runs to embrace him, clothes him with the finest robe, and throws a feast to celebrate his return.
Then Jesus introduces an older brother who refuses to come inside.
The father goes out to plead with him.
And then...The story ends.
We never learn whether the older brother joins the celebration. We never find out if he forgives his younger brother. We don't even know whether the prodigal son remains faithful after returning home.
At different moments in our lives, we may find ourselves in each of the characters. Sometimes we are the younger son, returning to God after wandering away. Sometimes we are the older brother, struggling to rejoice when mercy is shown to someone else. Sometimes we are called to imitate the father, choosing forgiveness over resentment.
Perhaps we are all part of the ending.
It's being written every time someone returns to Confession. Every time someone chooses mercy over bitterness. Every time a parent keeps praying for a child, or a child finds the courage to come home.
Maybe Jesus leaves the final chapter of this parable open because He invites each of us to decide how the story will end.
Will we remain outside the feast? Or will we step inside and rejoice that what was lost has been found?
