Most of us think of a deck of playing cards as nothing more than a game.
Yet centuries ago, playing cards often reflected the Christian culture in which they were were made.
When playing cards spread across Europe during the late Middle Ages, artisans didn't simply create random kings and queens. In France, the face cards gradually became associated with famous historical and biblical figures. The King of Spades represented King David. The King of Hearts became Charlemagne. The other kings depicted Alexander the Great and Julius Caesar. Even several of the queens were linked with women from Scripture and classical history.
Whether families consciously thought about these identities while playing is difficult to know. But the cards reflected something remarkable about Christian Europe: faith naturally found its way into ordinary life.

Churches adorned public squares. Saints' feast days shaped the calendar. Artists painted biblical scenes on everything from cathedral ceilings to everyday household items. Even something as ordinary as a deck of cards carried echoes of salvation history.
Today we often separate faith from recreation. Yet there's something wonderfully Christian about gathering around a table with family and friends, enjoying one another's company, and recognizing that even simple moments of leisure are gifts from God.
Our Catholic Playing Cards bring that tradition into the present. Each beautifully illustrated deck features Catholic imagery that makes family game night just a little more intentional—a reminder that our faith isn't something we leave behind when the fun begins.
