When we hear the name St. Maria Goretti, we might immediately think of her purity and her heroic death at the age of eleven.
And yet perhaps the greatest miracle associated with this young saint came after her death.
Maria was born in 1890 into a poor farming family in Italy. After her father's death from malaria, she helped care for her younger siblings while her mother worked in the fields. Although she had little formal education, Maria developed a deep love for Jesus and the Blessed Mother, receiving her First Holy Communion with great devotion.
On July 5, 1902, Maria was attacked by Alessandro Serenelli, a young man who had harassed her for months. Refusing to give in to his sinful demands, she courageously declared, "No! It is a sin! God does not want it!" She was mortally wounded and died the following day.
But before she died, Maria forgave him. Her final words included this remarkable prayer:
"I forgive Alessandro Serenelli … and I want him with me in heaven forever."
At first, Alessandro showed no remorse. Sentenced to prison, he remained bitter and angry for years.
But one night, Maria appeared to him in a dream, silently handing him fourteen white lilies, one for each wound he had inflicted upon her. He understood immediately that she had forgiven him. The experience transformed his life. Alessandro confessed his crimes, became a model prisoner, and after his release lived the remainder of his life as a lay brother in a Capuchin monastery, known for his humility and holiness.
When Alessandro sought out Maria's mother, Assunta, to ask her forgiveness, she responded with words that still move hearts today:
"If Maria forgives you, and God forgives you, how can I not also forgive you?"
The two attended Midnight Mass together that Christmas Eve and received Holy Communion side by side. Years later, Alessandro attended Maria's canonization in St. Peter's Square, where the young girl he had murdered was declared a saint.
St. Maria Goretti's story is certainly one of purity and courage. But it is equally a story about the transforming power of forgiveness. Her mercy did not excuse evil, but it opened the door for a sinner to repent, convert, and spend the rest of his life seeking God.
Our St. Maria Goretti Fire-Polished Crystal Rosary honors this remarkable young saint. As we pray the Rosary with Our Lady, may we also ask St. Maria Goretti for the grace to live with purity of heart, courage in the face of temptation, and the willingness to forgive as Christ has forgiven us.
