Most of us don't think much about our breathing.
Yet researchers have found that the way we breathe affects our nervous system. Rapid, shallow breathing often accompanies stress and anxiety. Slower, more deliberate breathing—especially a slow exhale—can help calm both the body and the mind.
That shouldn't surprise us.
Long before scientists began studying the effects of breathing, Christians were already incorporating it into prayer.
One of the oldest examples is the Jesus Prayer, a simple prayer that has been prayed for centuries in the Eastern Catholic and Orthodox traditions. Traditionally, it is prayed in rhythm with the breath:
On the inhale:
"Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the Living God..."
On the exhale:
"Have mercy on me, a sinner."
Sometimes called the Prayer of the Heart, this simple prayer invokes the Holy Name of Jesus while gently drawing our attention back to His presence. The Catechism of the Catholic Church even highlights the Jesus Prayer as a beautiful expression of continual prayer (CCC 2665-2669).
The very breath God has given us becomes an opportunity to return to Him.
When anxiety begins to rise, when the mind becomes distracted, or when life simply feels overwhelming, we don't always need long prayers or elaborate words. Sometimes we simply need to slow down, breathe, and whisper the Holy Name of Jesus.
The Psalmist reminds us:
"He leads me beside still waters; he restores my soul." (Psalm 23:2)
Perhaps those "still waters" can begin with stillness in our own hearts.
Our Jesus Beads are designed especially for this ancient devotion. Inspired by the traditional chotki, they help guide the rhythm of the Jesus Prayer, making it easy to pray wherever you are. Whether during a quiet moment at home, while walking, or even sitting in traffic, they offer a simple way to keep your heart—and even your breathing—turned toward Christ.
