If someone told you a saint once lit a fire with his fingertips, you might think it belonged in a medieval legend.
Yet that's exactly what tradition tells us about St. Blaan, a sixth-century Scottish bishop and missionary.
According to his ancient biography, which appears in the Aberdeen Breviary (Breviarium Aberdonense), a collection of Scottish saints' lives first printed in 1509–1510, St. Blaan was preparing to celebrate Mass when he discovered there was no fire available to light the candles. Rather than becoming frustrated, he prayed, and God miraculously kindled a flame from the tips of his fingers, allowing the sacred liturgy to continue.
Whether read as history or cherished tradition, the story points to something much greater than the miracle itself. For St. Blaan, the light of the altar was worth extraordinary trust in God. And he had reason to believe this.
Throughout Scripture, fire is often a sign of God's presence: the burning bush that spoke to Moses, the pillar of fire that guided Israel through the wilderness, and the tongues of fire that descended upon the Apostles at Pentecost. St. Blaan's story reminds us that every candle we light in prayer echoes that same desire; that Christ, the Light of the World, would illumine our hearts.
Today, lighting a candle before prayer is a simple but meaningful way to pause, quiet our minds, and remember God's presence. We may not kindle flames with our fingertips, but we can still ask the Lord to set our hearts ablaze with faith.
