What would you be willing to give up to practice your Catholic faith?
For St. Kateri Tekakwitha, the answer was everything.
Born in 1656 in present-day New York to a Mohawk father and a Christian Algonquin mother, Kateri lost her parents and brother during a smallpox epidemic when she was only four years old. She survived, but the disease left her face scarred and her eyesight permanently weakened.
As she grew older, Jesuit missionaries introduced her to the Gospel. Their words took root in her heart, and at the age of nineteen she was baptized, receiving the name Kateri, the Mohawk form of Catherine.
That decision changed everything.
Her relatives opposed her conversion. She was ridiculed for praying, pressured to abandon her new faith, and even denied food because she refused to work on Sundays after becoming a Christian.
Eventually, the persecution became so severe that Kateri made an extraordinary decision.
She fled her village and walked more than 200 miles through forests and rivers to reach a Christian Native village near Montreal, where she could freely practice her faith.
Today, many of us can attend Mass within a short drive of our homes. We carry Catholic apps in our pockets, own Bibles and rosaries, and have access to countless spiritual resources. Kateri had none of those things. Yet she willingly left behind everything familiar simply to live as a faithful Catholic.
After arriving at the mission, Kateri devoted herself to prayer, acts of charity, and a life of remarkable holiness. She became known as the "Lily of the Mohawks," not because life had been easy, but because her purity, humility, and love for Christ flourished despite tremendous hardship.
Sometimes the saints challenge us with dramatic miracles, and sometimes they challenge us with a simple question:
How much do we value our faith?
