Every October 7, the Church celebrates the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary. But that was not its original name.
The feast was first called Our Lady of Victory because it commemorated an incredible military victory attributed to Mary’s intercession.
In 1571, the powerful Ottoman navy was advancing across the Mediterranean. Christian Europe was divided, and many feared that its forces could not withstand another attack. Pope St. Pius V worked to unite the Christian nations into the Holy League, but he knew that ships and soldiers would not be enough.
He asked Catholics throughout Europe to pray the Rosary.
While the fleet prepared for battle, ordinary Catholics gathered in churches, monasteries, and homes. On October 7, the Holy League encountered the much-feared Ottoman fleet near Lepanto. After hours of fierce fighting, the Christian fleet won an unexpected and decisive victory.
According to tradition, Pope Pius V learned of the victory before any messenger could have reached Rome. During a meeting, he suddenly rose, went to a window, and announced that the Christian forces had prevailed. Convinced that the victory had been obtained through God’s providence and Mary’s intercession, Pope Pius V established the Feast of Our Lady of Victory.
A few years later, Pope Gregory XIII renamed it the Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary. Now the feast would not bear the name of the battle but the name of the prayer offered by countless ordinary believers!
Most Catholics will never face a naval battle, but everyone faces struggles that seem beyond human strength. A child leaves the Faith. A marriage is strained. A terminal illness is diagnosed. Fear begins to overcome hope.
The Feast of Our Lady of the Rosary reminds us that through prayer, we place our battles into God’s hands. The Rosary draws us into the mysteries of Christ and teaches us to face every struggle with Mary’s faith, courage, and trust.
