Military families carry a unique cross - and also a unique grace.
Some live with frequent goodbyes, long stretches of uncertainty, and the weight of loving someone who serves in harm’s way. Behind every uniform is a spouse holding down a home, children learning resilience early, parents praying fervently for protection, and hearts that must constantly entrust their loved one to God.
As a Church, we are called not only to honor their sacrifice, but to walk with them in faith, offering real support, encouragement, and prayer.
The Hidden Sacrifice of Military Family Life
Military life is not just a career - it is a calling that often rises out of virtue and desire to protect the vulnerable and honor strong values. It shapes the one who serves, and also the entire family.
Deployments, relocations, missed holidays, and the emotional strain of distance can take a toll. Spouses often carry the responsibilities of both parents, while children navigate change and absence in ways that require maturity beyond their years. Even in times of peace, uncertainty remains.
Yet within this sacrifice lies a daily offering of love, service, and trust. Military families live out a form of self-gift that mirrors the Gospel - laying down comfort and stability for the sake of a greater good.

Staying Anchored in Faith Amid Uncertainty
For military families, faith is not just comforting - it is essential.
When circumstances are beyond control, prayer becomes a lifeline. The Eucharist, when accessible, offers strength and grounding. Devotions, Scripture, and sacramentals become tangible reminders that God is near, even across oceans and time zones.
Some meaningful ways military families can stay rooted in faith include:
- Establish daily prayer rhythms: Even a simple morning offering or nightly family prayer creates stability in the midst of change.
-
Stay connected to the sacraments: Seek out nearby parishes or military chapels whenever possible.
Create a sacred space at home: A small prayer corner with a crucifix, Bible, saint images and a photo of your military loved one helps center the whole family. Seeing and using the space throughout the day brings comfort, and serves as a constant reminder of the importance of prayer and entrusting your loved one to the Lord. - Turn to Favorite Patron Saints: St. Michael the Archangel is the powerful Patron of those who serve. St. Joseph is the protector and Patron of the Family. St. Thérèse, was known as the Shield of Soldiers by soldiers in WWI and WWII because of stories of her powerful intercession and miraculous deliverance. Turn to these saints, other beloved saints, or favorite patrons of your loved one.
- Embrace spiritual communion during separation: When attending Mass together isn’t possible, unite spiritually in prayer.
Faith does not remove the hardship, but it can transform it, giving peace that the world cannot offer and anchoring you all in the sense of sacrifice, purpose and commitment.
How to Support a Military Family
Many people want to help, but aren’t sure how. The most meaningful support is often simple, consistent, genuine care and encouragement. Military families do not need grand gestures as much as they need to know they are not alone.
Here are practical and heartfelt ways to support them:
Pray intentionally for those who serve. Mention them by name and ask for protection, peace, and perseverance.
Stay in touch during deployments. A message, handwritten note, or small care package can mean more than you realize.
Offer concrete help such as meals, childcare, or help with errands. Lifting everyday burdens can make room for a little more peace.
Remember important dates. Deployments, anniversaries, and holidays can be especially difficult.
Welcome them into community. Invite them to parish events and help them feel a sense of community and belonging wherever they are. Share and show your gratitude for their sacrifice. Don't feel awkward mentioning it to them.

Support the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA
Many Catholic service members who are deployed go long stretches without Mass or Confession simply because a priest is not available. That absence is a hidden hardship that few people see, but it is real.
This is why the Archdiocese for the Military Services, USA matters so much. The AMS exists to provide pastoral care and the sacraments to those who serve, often in places where a local parish is not accessible. Its chaplains are priests who serve on loan from their home dioceses or religious communities. They remain under their own bishops and superiors, yet they step away for a term of service so they can bring Christ and the sacraments to military members and their families.
Unlike a typical diocese, the AMS has no parishes and no weekly collections, and it relies on private support to carry out its mission. This is why prayer and practical support for the AMS and for military chaplains is not an “extra.” It is one concrete way of helping Catholic families stay anchored in faith when distance, uncertainty, and deployment make ordinary spiritual life difficult.
At The Catholic Company, we are grateful to support the Archdiocese for the Military Services as its first corporate donor. This cause is important to us as many of our employees have served, or have family members who are currently serving, and we keep them in our prayers. In supporting military families, we also want to support the sacramental ministry that strengthens them.
What Military Families Need
Beyond logistics, military families need spiritual encouragement and emotional support.
They need reassurance that their sacrifices matter. They need reminders that God sees them, sustains them, and walks with them through every uncertainty. They need spaces, both physical and spiritual, where they can rest, pray, play, and reconnect.
Thoughtful, faith-filled gifts can also play a meaningful role. These are not just items, but reminders of God’s presence and the prayers of loved ones.
When choosing a gift for a military family, look for items that offer comfort, connection, and spiritual strength.
Consider meaningful options like:
Pocket Prayer Books for deployment. Compact and durable, these allow service members to carry prayer wherever they go.
St. Michael Chaplets or Medals as a powerful reminder of protection and courage in moments of fear or danger.
Durable Rosaries for a tangible connection to faith and home, and a steady source of peace in Our Lady's protection.
Scripture-based Devotionals that offer encouragement and reminders of truth for both spouses and children.
Home Prayer Items like Crucifixes, Images or Prayer Cards to help families create a sacred space no matter where they are stationed.
Children’s Resources & Activities that help young hearts understand and trust God during separations.
These gifts serve as anchors. They are quiet, faithful companions in seasons of distance and uncertainty.
A Witness of Hope and Trust
Military families remind us what it means to love with sacrifice and to trust in God’s providence.
Their lives are marked by courage, resilience, and a deep reliance on grace. In supporting them, we are not only offering kindness, we are participating in their mission, and strengthening the Church through our unity and care.
May we remember them, pray for them, and accompany them in their sacrifice for us all.
And may every military family know that wherever they are, they never alone, because Christ goes with them, and His Church stands beside them.
