The Giotto Crucifix was inspired by the School of Franciscan spirituality of Christus Patiens which highlights the theme of humility and love rather than glory, hence the colors are primarily black, white and red, representing death, purity, blood and the Passion. Painted in 1288 and masterfully restored in the year 2000, it resides at the Basilica of Santa Maria Novella, founded by the monks of Dominican Order in the first half of the 13th C,
