Can praying the same prayer over and over really change us?

If you struggle with the monotony of the Rosary, perhaps don't think of it as something to overcome, but as one way that we might be transformed over time.

Holy Rosary Prayer and Inspiration

For many people, the Rosary is one of the most difficult prayers to stick with.

This may be because it is repetitive.

The Hail Mary is repeated fifty times in a standard Rosary, and it is easy to wonder whether saying the same words again and again can really deepen our relationship with God.

St. Josemaría Escrivá thought so.

In fact, he offered one of the most memorable reflections on the Rosary when he wrote:

"Blessed be that monotony of Hail Marys which purifies the monotony of your sins!"

Saint Escriva's words ring true. Our lives are already filled with repetition. We brush our teeth every day. We prepare meals, drive to work, answer emails, fold laundry, and repeat countless routines without giving them much thought. Much of life is built on habits, and over time, those habits shape who we become.

The same is true in the spiritual life. St. Josemaría often reminded us that holiness is built through fidelity in little things. He once compared the spiritual life to the construction of a great building.

"Have you seen how that imposing building was built?... By dint of little things!"

The Rosary works much the same way. Each Hail Mary may seem small on its own. But over time, these repeated prayers can shape our hearts. They teach us patience, quiet our distractions, and draw our attention back to Christ through the eyes of His Mother.

Think of the parent who tells a child, "I love you," every day. The words are repeated, yet they never become meaningless. In fact, it is often the repetition that gives them their strength.

The Rosary invites us into that same kind of faithful love.

Far from being empty repetition, each Hail Mary becomes another opportunity to contemplate the mysteries of Christ's life. As our lips repeat familiar prayers, our minds and hearts are invited to dwell on the Incarnation, the Cross, the Resurrection, and the glory of Heaven.

St. Josemaría believed that when we offer small things well, we reveal our love for our Lord. He wrote:

"Persevere in the exact fulfilment of the obligations of the moment. That work—humble, monotonous, small—is prayer expressed in action."

The same could be said of the Rosary. If you find yourself growing weary of its repetition, remember that the repetition is part of the gift. Every Hail Mary is another opportunity to turn your thoughts back to Christ. Over time, those small moments of fidelity become habits of prayer that quietly transform the heart.
