Happy Fourth of July!
Today, families across America will gather for cookouts, parades, and fireworks as we celebrate our nation's birthday. This year is especially meaningful as we commemorate the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States.
It's a wonderful day to celebrate. But it's also a day to remember.
As America marks its 250th anniversary, we wanted to honor four remarkable Catholic military chaplains whose stories deserve to be better known. No Greater Love, our new short documentary, tells the story of priests who carried the Eucharist instead of weapons, bringing Christ's presence to soldiers in the midst of war.
The inspiration for this project began years ago through our friendship with Fr. Pawlikowski, who was the Command Chaplain at West Point when our son was a cadet. It was through him that I first came to appreciate the extraordinary witness of Fr. Emil Kapaun and the other Catholic chaplains featured in the film.
Peter, who later in his career in the army served as a Commander at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, developed a profound appreciation for the men and women who serve there, and his reflections are interwoven into this documentary.
Together, we wanted to honor four extraordinary priests: Fr. Emil Kapaun, Fr. Vincent Capodanno, Fr. Joseph O'Callahan, and Fr. Charles Watters. These men celebrated Mass whenever they could, comforted the wounded, and remained with the men entrusted to their care, even at the cost of their own lives.
As we celebrate the freedoms we enjoy today, it is fitting to remember those who have preserved them—and the priests who served beside them.
