Do you live like Mary? Here’s how to start.

Let's dive into the 10 principle virtues of Mary...

Life of Mary Mary Virtues of Mary

We are called to pattern our lives after that of Jesus Christ. When this seems daunting, it’s helpful to turn to the example of fellow human beings who imitated Him well: the saints.

Ultimately, however, no one has imitated Jesus better than His own Mother. Mary, Mother of God and Mother of Souls, has been given to us as an example which we can strive to imitate. When we draw near to her, she leads us to her Son. Mary, the Mother of God and our spiritual Mother, shows us how holiness grows in everyday life.

In his classic work True Devotion to Mary, St. Louis de Montfort lists the “ten principal virtues of the most Holy Virgin Mary.”

We’ve listed them here, along with simple ways you can live them out:

The Virtues of Mary

Deep Humility – Mary said, “I am the handmaid of the Lord.” (Lk 1:38) Let praise redirect you to God.

Lively Faith – Even at the foot of the cross, Mary believed. Trust God in what you do not yet understand.

Blind Obedience – Mary accepted God’s will fully and freely. Choose what God asks, even when you don’t understand it.

Unceasing Prayer – Mary pondered all things in her heart. Intentional silence and simple conversations with God form lifelong prayer.

Self-Denial – Mary’s “yes” to God meant saying no to her own desires. Offer up daily small acts for others.

Surpassing Purity – Pure in intention and deed, Mary reflected God’s love. Ask God to purify your heart and direct your mind.

Ardent Charity – Mary’s love for God overflowed outward. Let your love show—particularly when it’s hard.

Heroic Patience – From Bethlehem to Calvary, Mary trusted even when time seemed long. In waiting and struggle, lean on Christ.

Angelic Kindness – Mary welcomed Elizabeth, cared for her Son, stood faithfully. Kindness rooted in gentleness draws people nearer to God.

Divine Wisdom – “Seat of Wisdom” is one of her titles. Before acting, Mary reflected. Before speaking, listen. Let the Spirit guide you.

You don’t need to master all ten at once. In fact, you certainly won’t!

Pick one virtue this week: choosing patience when delayed, kindness in a simple smile, or trust in a work undone. Mary is with you—invite her prayers and learn from her example.

Imitating Mary isn’t about perfection—it’s about presence. As her virtues shape you, you mirror the Gospel in your life. Mary doesn’t just point to Jesus; she leads us straight to Him.
