On April 2, 1968, a Muslim bus driver named Farouk Mohammed Atwa was working near a Coptic Orthodox church in Zeitoun, a district of Cairo, Egypt, when he noticed something unusual. A woman dressed in white appeared to be standing on the church's dome.
Thinking she was about to jump, he shouted a warning. But then someone cried out, “This is the Virgin Mary!”
According to eyewitness accounts, a luminous figure resembling the Blessed Mother stood above the church, accompanied by mysterious lights and what appeared to be glowing white doves.
This was only the beginning.
Over the next several years, thousands of people gathered outside St. Mary's Church in Zeitoun, hoping to witness what became known as the apparitions of Our Lady of Zeitoun.

Unlike the apparitions at Fatima or Lourdes, these appearances were not witnessed by a handful of children. Crowds of Christians and Muslims reported seeing the luminous figure above the church. Some appearances lasted only minutes, while others reportedly continued for more than two hours.
Photographs were taken, newspapers covered the events, and accounts of extraordinary healings began circulating. The Coptic Orthodox Church investigated the reports and officially affirmed the apparitions in May 1968.
Apparently, Our Lady never spoke. There were no messages delivered to visionaries, no secrets revealed, and no instructions given to the crowds.
Yet the apparitions brought people of different religions together in prayer.
The location itself is significant. Egypt was where St. Joseph took Mary and the Christ Child to protect Jesus from King Herod. According to local Christian tradition, the Holy Family passed through the area of Zeitoun during their time in Egypt.
In its official statement, the Coptic Orthodox Patriarchate expressed the hope that Mary's appearance would become a sign of peace for Egypt and the world.
More than fifty years later, Our Lady of Zeitoun remains one of the lesser-known Marian apparition accounts, despite the remarkable number of people who reported witnessing it.
