On Sunday the Church celebrated a feast that beautifully continues the season’s joy: the Feast of the Holy Family. It’s a celebration that draws our hearts back to the heart of Christmas — not the manger alone, but the family into which God was born.
We often think of Christmas in terms of angels and shepherds and wise men. But Scripture gives us a daily-life snapshot of Jesus with Mary and Joseph — a family like any other, yet unlike any other. The Holy Family faced uncertainty, danger, and the ordinary challenges of raising a child. They fled as refugees, struggled for survival, and had to search anxiously for Jesus when He was lost in Jerusalem.
Here’s an interesting detail: the Holy Family never had servants, wealth, or influence. Their home was small, their resources limited, and their life unglamorous by worldly standards. Yet this family model became the blueprint for every Christian home. Pope Saint John Paul II once said that the Holy Family is the “perfect model for the domestic church.” In them, we see love grounded not in perfection but in faithful perseverance.
An old story from the early Church Fathers reflects this beautifully:
When asked where God could be found, a believer replied, “Look where He was raised.”
In a humble home in Nazareth, we find God not on a throne but in family life — in shared meals, quiet obedience, hard work, and moments of worry and wonder.
The Feast of the Holy Family invites us to contemplate our own relationships, to embrace the ordinary with extraordinary love, and to ask Saint Joseph, Mary, and Jesus to guide our families in faith, hope, and charity.
