What Saints were fathers?

A Family Of Saints
What Saints were fathers?

When we think of saints, we often picture priests, religious sisters, or martyrs. But some of the Church's greatest saints were also fathers—men who changed diapers, provided for their families, worried about their children, and sought to lead their households closer to Christ.

This Father's Day, consider these saintly fathers:

St. Louis IX of France was a king, but he considered his greatest responsibility to be raising his children in the faith. He famously instructed his son, "I would rather see you dead at my feet than guilty of a mortal sin."

St. Thomas More was a devoted husband and father who balanced public service with family life. His home was known for its joy, learning, and prayer. Even while imprisoned for remaining faithful to Christ, he continued to encourage his children through letters.

St. Isidore the Farmer was a married layman and father who worked hard, prayed faithfully, and became known for his humility and trust in God. He shows that holiness isn't reserved for kings and scholars.

St. Zelie Martin, the mother of St. Thérèse, is well known, but her husband St. Louis Martin is equally worthy of admiration. Together they raised five daughters who entered religious life, including one of the most beloved saints in Church history. Louis demonstrated that holiness can be found in the ordinary sacrifices of family life.

St. Gregory the Elder was the father of an astonishing family of saints: St. Gregory of Nyssa, St. Macrina the Younger, St. Basil the Great, and St. Peter of Sebaste. If there were a "Saint of Raising Saints," he'd be a contender.

And of course, there is St. Joseph, the foster father of Jesus and the model for every Christian father. Though Scripture records none of his words, his actions speak volumes. He protected, provided for, and faithfully led the Holy Family through uncertainty and hardship.

What do these holy fathers have in common? Their strength came not from worldly success but from prayer, sacrifice, virtue, and a willingness to place God first.

In a culture that often offers confusing messages about masculinity, fathers need examples of authentic Christian manhood. Manual for Men by Bishop Thomas Olmsted serves as a practical guide for men striving to become faithful husbands, fathers, sons, and disciples. Drawing on Scripture, the saints, and the Church's wisdom, it challenges men to embrace their God-given mission and fight for what matters most: their souls and their families.
