Where is the Sacred Heart found in Scripture?

The Sacred Heart devotion is not simply a private piety from a later century. It is deeply rooted in Scripture itself.

Sacred Heart Scripture St. Mary Alocoque

“My son, give me thy heart.”
— Proverbs 23:26

Many Catholics associate devotion to the Sacred Heart with St. Margaret Mary Alacoque, the 17th-century French nun who received visions of Christ’s Heart burning with love for humanity. But the devotion itself is not new. In many ways, it is simply a lens through which we see the Gospel more clearly.

The Sacred Heart devotion highlights what Scripture has always revealed: the immense love of Christ for humanity.

As St. Jerome famously said:

“Ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ.”

If we want to know the Sacred Heart more deeply, we should begin where the Church always begins, in the Gospels themselves. Two moments near the end of Jesus’ life reveal this Heart of love most clearly: the Upper Room and the Cross.

At the Last Supper, Jesus gathered His Apostles in an intimate moment before His Passion. In these final hours, He revealed the deepest mysteries of His love and called His disciples into union with Him.

He spoke of sacrifice, friendship, and the limitless nature of divine love:

“This is My commandment, that you should love one another, as I have loved you. This is the greatest love a man can show, that he should lay down his life for his friends.”
— John 15:13

Archbishop Fulton Sheen described these chapters of John’s Gospel as “The Divine Lover’s Farewell.” Christ’s love, he wrote, has no limits. Just as the branches draw life from the vine, the disciples would draw life from His love.

The Sacred Heart is also present in a very physical way during this same moment. At the Last Supper, St. John the Evangelist rested his head on Christ’s breast, leaning against His Heart.

St. Margaret Mary later described her own mystical experiences of the Sacred Heart as a grace similar to that given to the beloved disciple:

“After having received from my Divine Saviour a favor similar to that bestowed upon the Beloved Disciple, of reposing on the bosom of Our Lord, the Divine Heart was represented to me on a throne of fire and flames…”

The devotion to the Sacred Heart flows from that same intimacy. Christ desires closeness with every disciple.

And then there is the Cross.

In John 19:34, we see one of the most powerful moments connected to the Sacred Heart:

“…one soldier thrust his lance into his side, and immediately blood and water flowed out.”

From the wounded side of Christ flowed blood and water—the signs of the sacraments and the life of the Church. Even after death, His Heart poured itself out for the salvation of the world.

For this reason the Sacred Heart is often shown with the wound of the lance, reminding us that Christ held nothing back. His love was poured out completely.

The Sacred Heart devotion is not simply a private piety from a later century. It is deeply rooted in Scripture itself. The Gospels reveal again and again the Heart of Christ: loving, wounded, and poured out for us.

And that Heart still calls to us today:

“Give me thy heart.”
