What Do Popes Past and Present Say About Our Guardian Angels?

Author:Whitney Hetzel

When it comes to guardian angels, Popes past and present have relied on their prayers and protection. If we know the Pope turns to his guardian angel for help, shouldn't we turn to ours as well? The Catechism of the Catholic Church says, "The existence of angels is a truth of the faith... Christ is the center of the angelic world." The following are the words from Popes regarding angels and why they rely on them for help:

Pope Francis: “How often have we heard ‘I should do this, I should not do this, that’s not right, be careful ...’. So often! It is the voice of our traveling companion....our guardian angel." “No one journeys alone and no one should think that they are alone,”

Pope Benedict: “From the beginning until death, human life is surrounded by their constant protection.”

“Dear friends, the Lord is always near and active in human history, and follows us with the unique presence of His angels..."

Pope John Paul II:

"Everyone of us is entrusted to the care of an angel. That is why we must have a lively and profound devotion to our own Guardian Angel, and why we should often and trustfully repeat the dear prayer we were taught in the days of our childhood. May we never fail in this devotion to the angels! During our earthly pilgrimage we may often run the risk of having to face the natural elements in turmoil, or the wrath of men who may seek to do us harm. But our Guardian Angel is always present. Let us never forget him and always remember to pray to him."

Pope Pius XI : "I feel that he is here, close by, ready to help me...Every day, morning and evening, pray to your guardian angel, especially in difficulties."

Pope Pius XII: "In speaking with someone who is closed to your argument, go to your guardian angel and recommend the matter to him. Ask him to take it up wth the guardiean angel of the person you have to see. Once the two angels establish an understanding, the conversation with the visitor will be much easier."

"We must unite with the holy angels; with them we must become one great strong family in view of the times that are approaching us!"

Pope John XXIII: "Rely on your guardian angels, the lovable heralds of our will. May the angels, present in every home, speak of our desire to bring about social concord, good morals, the practice of charity, peace among nations."

Angel of God, Our Guardian Dear, to whom God's love commits us here, ever this day be at our side, to light, to guard, to rule, to guide.
