“From the beginning the Church has honored the memory of the dead and offered prayers in suffrage for them, above all the Eucharistic sacrifice, so that, thus purified, they may attain the beatific vision of God.” - CCC 1032

Prayer for Eternal Rest (The Requiem Prayer)

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord,
and let perpetual light shine upon them.
May the souls of all the faithful departed,
through the mercy of God, rest in peace.
~Amen~

Requiem aeternam dona eis, Domine.
Et lux perpetua luceat eis.
Fidelium animae, per misericordiam Dei,
requiescant in pace.
~Amen~

The ancient “Eternal Rest” prayer, often sung in Latin as the “Requiem”, presents several heartfelt petitions to Our Lord, namely that God look with mercy on the poor souls of the departed, and that God's loving mercy purify the departed of all stain of sin so they may come to bask in the perfect, glorious light of eternal life in Heaven.

The Eternal Rest Prayer and prayer in general are a beautiful gift we can give to our loved ones who have died. Such prayers both keep us connected to them and also truly benefit their souls. Thank YOU for taking the time to pray the Eternal Rest prayer!

You can also show your love and support for the family of the bereaved, or remember your own dearly departed, with memorial gifts. Commemorative items such as a garden statue, memorial candle, or even a personalized memorial plaque or cross can be a tangible source of closure and consolation to anyone experiencing the loss of a loved one.
