We’re back to our normally scheduled programming today after some technical difficulties yesterday! Today is the feast of St. Dominic and we want to tell you a story about his life, a dangerous heresy, and the powerful weapon created to combat it: the Most Holy Rosary.
St. Dominic, a humble and holy man, was preaching against the Albigensian heresy in the 12th century. This heresy taught that only the spiritual is good and that everything material is bad. Therefore, the body itself is evil, and every person’s soul is imprisoned in that evil body. The only way a person could experience salvation was to be freed from the imprisonment of their flesh. Beyond being wrong, this heresy was dangerous, as people would attempt to liberate themselves from their bodies through starvation and even suicide.

St. Dominic prayed to God and asked Him to provide what was needed to overcome this grave heresy. After St. Dominic had prayed and fasted for three days, Our Lady appeared to him and instructed him to preach her Psalter in order to overcome this heresy. Our Lady’s Psalter involved praying 150 Hail Marys divided into groups of 10 by Our Fathers. Our Lady then gave St. Dominic mysteries to meditate on while praying the Psalter. These mysteries, which were stories of Christ’s Incarnation and life, directly contradicted the Albigensian heresy! While we pray the Rosary, we use our bodies, raising our voices and imagination in prayer.
