Featured here is The Sistine Madonna, painted by Raphael c. 1512. It depicts Mary entering the earthly realm holding the Christ Child in her arms. Out of the heavens she carries Him into the world. Pope Sixtus II, a martyr from the third century, kneels on the left side, showing her the way.
On the other side is St. Barbara, who also suffered martyrdom in the third century. These saints were venerated on the altar of San Sisto in Piacenza, where the painting was to be displayed as a gift from the Pope. It is one of the most famous depictions of the Madonna & Child.
