This one, Voyage of Life: Childhood was painted by Thomas Cole in 1840. It is the first in a series of 4 paintings symbolizing the voyage of life. A gorgeous and meaningful gallery of work, the four pieces are an allegory for human life in its trials and joys:
With each progressive image, the travel is reversed from the previous picture. In Childhood, the infant glides from a dark cave into a rich, golden-green landscape of hope and promise. In Youth, the boy takes control of the boat and aims for a shining castle in the sky.
In Manhood, the adult relies on prayer and religious faith to sustain him through rough waters and a threatening landscape. In Old Age, the man is once again guided by his angel to heaven across the water.
