  • A Catholic Introduction to The Bible - The Old Testament

Although many Catholics are familiar with the four Gospels or other writings of the New Testament, for most, reading the Old Testament is like walking into a foreign land. Who wrote these 46 books? When were they written? Why were they written? What are we to make of its laws, its stories, its history, its prophecies? Should it be read by itself, or in light of the New Testament?

In this exciting new volume, John Bergsma and Brant Pitre offer a readable, exciting, and in-depth introduction to every single book of the Old Testament. Unlike other introductions, this volume not only examines the language, literature, and culture of the Old Testament from a historical perspective. It also interprets the Old Testament from a theological perspective, drawing on the New Testament, the living Tradition, and the faith of the Catholic Church. Perhaps most unique of all, this introduction also places the Old Testament in its liturgical context, showing how each book is used in the Scripture Readings of the contemporary Lectionary.

About the Authors

Brant Pitre

Brant Pitre, Ph.D., is Professor of Sacred Scripture at Notre Dame Seminary in New Orleans. He is the author of Jesus and the Last Supper, The Case for Jesus and the bestselling book, Jesus and the Jewish Roots of the Eucharist.

John Bergsma

John Bergsma is Professor of Theology at the Franciscan University of Steubenville and a Senior Fellow at the St. Paul Center for Biblical Theology. He is the author of Bible Basics for Catholics.

For decades, Catholics have needed an up-to-date Introduction to the Bible that is both readable enough for anyone to pick it up and begin to study but also in-depth enough to serve as a textbook for seminarians, graduate students, directors of religious education, and interested lay readers. Now we have one. It can be used as a textbook for classes on the Bible, for "Bible studies" on individual books of the Old Testament, or as a reference work for the general reader. Through its unique combination of history and theology, faith and reason, Scripture and tradition, Old and New Testaments, the work is sure to be a landmark volume for Catholic Scripture studies in the 21st century.

Old Testament Study with a genuine Catholic Christian Orthodoxy

"Finally, an Old Testament Commentary with profound Catholic Orthodoxy, including the 46 books as it has been since the canon was established back in the 4th Century. Although I'm still reading, I have yet to find a hidden agenda. No secular or anti-Catholic bias within the pages of this large, beautiful, and hefty hardcover volume. One of the reasons why I've stayed away from The Jerome Biblical Commentary for example, which is targeted to a more academic, not necessarily a Catholic Christian audience; basically in an effort to appeal to liberal or lukewarm readers. Bergsma and Pitre have written a wonderful tome for those of us who know that the New Testament is hidden in the Old and the Old Testament is revealed in the New. This book will greatly assist in your efforts, just have your Bible next to you to compare and learn."

A Great Guide

"I bought this to have a more in depth understanding of the Bible In A Year podcast. This is a wonderful tool for a more in depth explanation of the Old Testament written to be read along with the Bible, not instead."

Q&A

How many pages is the book? Is the old testament quoted verbatim or is each OT book summarized? Not sure if this is an actual bible format or how this work is constructed. Thank you.
This book is approximately 1,060 pages long. It is not a full Bible, but a scholarly introduction and commentary on the Old Testament that explains and discusses the books of Scripture rather than presenting the complete biblical text verbatim.
