Born in Oklahoma, Father Rother became a missionary priest in Santiago Atitlán, Guatemala, where he ministered to the poor, learned their language, and stood beside them during a time of intense civil unrest. Refusing to abandon his parishioners even when threatened, he famously said, “The shepherd cannot run.” On July 28, 1981, he was martyred in his rectory for his unwavering commitment to Christ and His people.
