  • Eat, Fast, Feast: Heal Your Body While Feeding Your Soul?A Christian Guide To Fasting

Wellness minded people today are increasingly turning to intermittent fasting to bolster their health. But we aren’t the first people to abstain from eating for a purpose. This routine was a common part of our spiritual ancestors’ lives for 1,500 years.

Jay Richards argues that Christians should recover the fasting lifestyle, not only to improve our bodies, but to bolster our spiritual health as well. In Eat, Fast, Feast, he combines forgotten spiritual wisdom on fasting and feasting with the burgeoning literature on ketogenic diets and fasting for improved physical and mental health. Based on his popular series “Fasting, Body and Soul” in The Stream, Eat, Fast, Feast explores what it means to substitute our hunger for God for our hunger for food, and what both modern science and the ancient monastics can teach us about this practice.

Richards argues that our modern diet—heavy in sugar and refined carbohydrates—locks us into a metabolic trap that makes fasting unfruitful and our feasts devoid of meaning. The good news, he reveals, is that we are beginning to resist the tyranny of processed foods, with millions of people pursuing low carb, ketogenic, paleo, and primal diets. This growing body of experts argue that eating natural fat and fasting is not only safe, but far better than how we eat today.

Richards provides a 40-day plan which combines a long-term “nutritional ketosis” with spiritual disciplines. The plan can be used any time of the year or be adapted to a penitential season on the Christian calendar, such as Advent or Lent.

Synthesizing recent science with ancient wisdom, Eat, Fast, Feast brings together the physical, mental, and spiritual benefits of intermittent fasting to help Christians improve their lives and their health, and bring them closer to God.

Thoroughly enjoyable

"Fasting is so hip right now, I love how this book combines the health benefits with the wonderful spiritual benefits as well."

This book changed my life

"I've always wanted to fast, but never understood why it was so dificult. This book has saved me, and I'm so grateful to God for the author doing his work on the subject matter. He takes a spiritual approach, but also a scientific one. It's the perfect marriage of facts both the ones we know as truth in Spirituality, and the ones we pick up through secular means. If you want to fast, and have no idea why you cannot do it, or why it's so tough, pick this book up. Open your heart to the Lord and he will lead you. I feel like a new human being, and it's because of the changes this book has given me the encouragement to try in my life."

Eat Fast Feast

"I've been interested in intermittent fasting for a long time, for health reasons but also for a deeper prayer life. This is the absolute best book I have happened upon, on the subject. The author's credentials support his writing. I recommend reading it cover to cover before ""jumping in"". It WILL be too difficult for some, but Jay Richards gives the reader a 5-week ""bridge plan"" to allow the body to adapt, and the keys to incorporating intermittent fasting into your life on a go-forward afterwards. Look around. America is one of the fattest countries and the increase in childhood diseases from overeating and eating way too much sugar and processed foods is alarming. Jay Richards has done his research. Once learned and practiced, the benefits are astounding, including mental clarity, peace, joy and a closer connection with our real life - eternity. I introduced a 72-year old non-Catholic friend to this book and he loves it and is incorporating this into his life. I am a Catholic woman, turning 69 years old this December. This book de-mystifies the biology of the human body and explains what we require for good nutrition and health. It works where every conventional diet (and supplement) fail. I know. Tried them all over the past 15 years. I don't need any of that anymore. THIS works! If I can can do this, and my 72-year old buddy can, YOU CAN TOO!"

I bought this book thinking

"I bought this book thinking it would help me to learn the proper way to fast. I found it very difficult to follow in the long term. I completed the first two weeks and realized that lifestyle was not realistic for me. Way too extreme as someone else stated. Definitely not practical for the average person. Disappointed."
