Our Lady first appeared to St. Juan Diego in Mexico in 1531, asking for a chapel on the hill where she appeared. When the Bishop doubted St. Juan Diego, Mary provided roses on the hill in winter, and had Juan take them to the Bishop as a sign. As he unfurled his cloak, or tilma, and the roses fell, Our Mother's image was mystically imprinted there.
