In Syria, according to local tradition, camels carried the three Magi to Bethlehem, & upon seeing the exhausted animals arrive, the infant Jesus blesses them with eternal life.

In the millennia since, the camel has taken on St Nicholas' role, ensuring well-behaved children receive their gifts. To welcome him, children fill shoes with hay and put out bowls of water on Christmas Eve. 

This camel is a reminder of the journey we all make, to encounter the Newborn King so as to follow Him to holiness. The beautiful ornament is vividly colored, mouth blown glass in the ancient tradition of Lauscha, Germany, where the art of blown glass Christmas ornaments began in the mid 1800's.
