A moving depiction of Our Lady and Our Lord at the Crucifixion, this elegant plaque is crafted in traditional della Robbia style. In 15th C. Florence, the sculptor Luca della Robbia was renowned for his extraordinary sculptures in terra cotta. His technique allowed him to fire ceramic surfaces with special reactive glazes, producing incredible detail and gorgeous color contrast. His traditional blue and white della Robbia sculptures of sacred Catholic history adorned many homes, churches and chapels. This arched plaque, in that same style, features the Florentine accents characteristic of his art form. White, patterned architectural details highlight the Crucifixion scene, where Our Lady prays at the foot of the Cross as Jesus dies for us. The brilliant blue background provides striking contrast.
