In architecture, the rose (rosette) window is the shape of the openwork bay in the wall. A large circle of glass piercing a wall supporting many tons of stone is a characteristically Gothic and incredibly astonishing architectural feat.
It is accomplished by a complicated crisscrossing of the opening with a visually delicate, but structurally strong, web of stone, which breaks the glass into smaller shapes in a symmetrical way, distributing weight equally across the entire circle. The rosettes of Notre Dame are among the best-preserved medieval stained glass windows in the world.
The "windows" are merely empty space within the stone until the glass brings them brilliance.
