The Liturgy of the Hours is meant to be a prayer encompassing the entire Body of Christ: clergy, religious and laity. Since ancient times Christians adopted the Jewish custom of setting apart specific times of the day for prayer. Eventually certain times for common prayer were established. Today this custom is called the Liturgy of the Hours, also referred to as the Divine Office or Christian Prayer (shorter form), and is mandatory for clergy and religious, though participation of the laity is highly encouraged. When possible the clergy and laity may join together for prayer especially when Vespers is celebrated on Sundays and solemn feast days. This prayer form focuses on the Psalms and includes Bible readings and spiritual writings from the Church Fathers and other authors. The full Liturgy of the Hours includes prayer seven times a day, but many people focus on the major prayer hours which include morning (Lauds) and evening (Vespers) prayers.

  • 1.Matins—(during night)------Nocturns prayer
  • 2.Lauds—(dawn)---------------dawn prayer
  • 3.Terce—(9am)----------------mid-morning prayer
  • 4.Sext—(12 noon)-------------midday prayer
  • 5.None—(3pm)-----------------mid-afternoon prayer
  • 6.Vespers—(evening)----------evening prayer
  • 7.Compline—(before bed)------night prayer

Liturgy of the Hours black leather bound set

"I recently purchased this set and couldn’t have asked for more. Beautiful, durable, complete, compact. I went with the $15 up charge for monogramming and it’s a lifetime purchase."

— Eduardo S. (5/5)

Leather bound Liturgy of the Hours

"This beautiful leather-bound 4-volume set will enhance your prayer life and daily devotion to Christ. Each volume fits comfortably into your hand while praying or reading and lies flat on a surface for hands-free reading. The volumes travel well as they are the same size as the Christian prayer book. The included prayer cards help new participants learn the process (or steps) to the Hours with easy access to common prayers. The 2025 guide directs the reader in ribbon placement to aid in navigating the daily prayers (beneficial for solemnities and feast days). Start your journey to a better prayer life with this beautiful set."

The Liturgy of the Hours - Set of 4

"These 4 volumes of the Liturgy of the Hours I have used for over 20 years. I love them! This set I bought for a new convert to Catholicism who has been praying the hours on her phone. She absolutely loved these Holy Books! There is nothing like using a book instead of phone … to rise your voice in prayer to our loving most Holy Trinity!"

Beautiful!

"These books are so wonderfully beautiful and well constructed. So excited to finally pray all hours of the LOH"

— Nick (5/5)

The LOTH has heightened my

"The LOTH has heightened my prayers to a higher level. It is especially gratifying to know that while you are praying for others that they too are praying for you. The hymns themselves lend its own inspiration that lifts up prayer and by the time you get to the psalms you find your soul soaring both in meditative prayer and thoughts of gratitude to the most High and mighty Lord of Hosts and His Son Jesus. The LOTH draws closeness in fulfillment of scripture when the Lord says to draw near to me and I will draw near to you."

— STEVEN R. (5/5)

I actually gave it away

"I actually gave it away when I went to Zambia recently, to the Spiritan fathers there as we dedicated their new chapel. So I need to purchase another one and learn how to pray the Liturgy of the Hours I had intended. :)"

— GLENDA C. (5/5)

Same edition used in Monastery

"I used this edition in a Monastery years ago. (I didn't make Solemn Profession- the last step in becoming a Nun) and I have been disabled before I was 49. I've wanted these Breviarys for years! They are beautiful and I love them! I won't be getting up at midnight to pray the Office of the Readings but can do in the morning. They are WONDERFUL! Thank you and God bless you all and your Company."

Q&A

When is the new edition out? 2026? Hopefully? Desperately? Please?🙏
Thank you for your question. The last update to the Divine Office was in 1975, but the USCCB is working with two publishers now to publish a new edition that will be released Ash Wednesday of 2027. We are looking forward to it too!
I was wondering why you do not sell more recent versions of the Liturgy of the Hours. I believe there is a newer version from 2005. Thank you
Thank you for your question. The new translation for the Liturgy of the Hours, Second Edition is currently being finalized for use in the United States. This major revision, the first in over 50 years, aims to provide a more accurate English translation of the Latin editio typica altera, while ensuring consistency with the 2011 translation of the Roman Missal. There has not been an updated version since the first version was published. The new version is expected to be released by Ash Wednesday 2027.
Can you send a sample of both regular font and large font side by side?
Thank you for your question. While we can't send you a sample, we can tell you that the regular font in the 4 Volume Divine Office is generally 10 pts while the large font is generally 14. There are different font sizes and styles used in various parts of the book so things do vary, but those are the basic font sizes for these sets.
Is the large type liturgy of the hours cover leather or vinyl
Thank you for your question. The Large Print edition of the 4 Volume Liturgy of the Hours is genuine leather. We do carry an imitation leather at a lower price point but it is not large print.
