This one, The Polish Madonna, or Saturday Ray, was painted by Piotr Stachiewicz in the early 19th C. It depicts a Polish legend that the sun must shine for at least a moment every Saturday, to dry the clothing of the Baby Jesus before Sunday. Our Lady hangs laundry while the Infant Christ waits patiently. He holds a small cross as if enjoying this sweet moment, but contemplating what is to come.
