St. Agnes of Rome

St. Agnes is one of the seven women besides the Virgin Mary, commemorated by name in the Roman Missal. Agnes lived during the third century and was raised in a devout Christian family. Agnes wished to live a life completely devoted to God, and remain unmarried. However, her refusal to marry led to her imprisonment, torture and eventual martyrdom. According to tradition, St. Agnes' virginity was preserved throughout her persecution, and she died with her virginity intact. St. Agnes is the patroness of girls, chastity, and rape victims. Her feast day is celebrated on January 21st.
