St. Basil the Great
St. Basil was born in the year 330. He became a monk and founded several monasteries. He wrote a famous monastic rule, which has proved to be the most lasting of those in the East. He was eventually ordained a priest and in 370 was made bishop of Caesaria. Until his death, he continued to be a man of continuous learning, articulacy in speech, constant activity and great charity. He was declared a doctor of the Church after his death, and is known for his many accomplishments as bishop. His feast day is celebrated on January 2nd.
