Prayer is not easy, and neither is coming to understand when and how God may be answering our prayers. My two big pieces advice:
1) Remember what God has already done for you (in the Old Testament, God is constantly asking Israel to look back and remember the things he has already done for them, so that they will trust him in the present moment);
2) Pay attention by "practicing the presence of God," that is, cultivating a continual habit of prayer throughout your day and accepting what comes to you in the present moment as God's will for your life (the saints have talked about this constantly as their key to growing in virtue).
