Life is Fleeting: A Brief Reflection for Lent
Mar 15, 2025 by Veronica Mena
Lent is a season of repentance, renewal, and reflection, reminding us of a fundamental truth—life is fleeting. In the midst of our busy lives, we often forget that our time on Earth is temporary. Ash Wednesday’s solemn words, “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return” (Genesis 3:19), serve as a powerful reminder of our mortality.
But this realization is not meant to instill fear; rather, it invites us to deepen our faith, realign our priorities, and draw closer to God. So how can we use Lent as a time to embrace the brevity of life and grow spiritually?
1. Embracing Lent as a Time of Conversion
Throughout Scripture, we see that God calls His people to conversion. Lent is our opportunity to turn away from sin and back toward God.
-
Examine Your Heart: Use this season to reflect on areas in your life where you need spiritual growth.
-
Seek Confession: The sacrament of Reconciliation is a powerful way to cleanse the soul and restore our relationship with God.
-
Daily Prayer: Dedicate time each day for deeper conversation with God, meditating on His Word.
2. Understanding the Temporary vs. the Eternal
Life on Earth is short, but our souls are eternal. Jesus reminds us: “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth... but store up treasures in heaven” (Matthew 6:19-20).
-
Detach from Materialism: Lent encourages us to shift our focus from temporary pleasures to things of lasting value.
-
Practice Almsgiving: Give generously to those in need, knowing that true wealth lies in love and service.
-
Fast with Purpose: Fasting is not just about self-denial but about redirecting our hearts toward God.
3. Finding Hope in the Resurrection
While Lent reminds us of the fleeting nature of life, it also prepares us for the joy of Easter and Christ’s victory over death.
-
Embrace the Cross: Just as Jesus suffered, we too will face trials, but our suffering is not in vain.
-
Live with Purpose: Knowing that our time is limited should inspire us to live with greater faith and intention.
-
Rejoice in the Promise of Eternal Life: Through Christ, death is not the end—it is the beginning of eternal joy.
4. Making the Most of Each Day
If life is fleeting, how should we live? St. Therese of Lisieux reminds us, “Let us not lose our time; perhaps only one minute separates us from eternity.”
-
Love More: Forgive, be kind, and share Christ’s love with others.
-
Deepen Your Faith: Read Scripture, pray, and participate in the Sacraments regularly.
-
Serve Others: Use your gifts to bless those around you.
A Call to Live with Eternity in Mind
Lent is a time to reflect on the temporary nature of life and prepare our hearts for what truly matters—eternity with God. By embracing prayer, fasting, and almsgiving, we realign ourselves with His divine purpose.
